Alella Wine Region
This is the closest wine area to Barcelona (20 km away only). It is best known for white wines. The main varieties are white raisins and white grenache. Aromatic rosé wines are also made, with Grenache, Merlot and pink raisins. Fifty winegrowers cultivate 227 hectares, and there are only nine wineries.
The area is located between the sea and the mountains.
In Roman times, Pliny and Marcial already cited their wines as Laietan wines. In the Middle Ages they were the favorites in Barcelona, and in modern times they were exported to the Spanish colonies overseas.
The DO Alella is one of the smallest and oldest in the Iberian Peninsula.
